Alpha II began as an affiliate corporation of Kirschner Associates, Inc. in the late 1960's. Kirschner was a well-known management consulting organization that specialized in research, evaluation, and planning. Kirschner Assoc. was most familiar to educators via its Impact Study of Head Start, which was heralded by the U.S. Office of Child Development as "one of the most important social documents of the past decade".
Kirschner Associates engaged in studies of many national programs (early childhood, nutrition, community planning, senior citizens, etc.) for a variety of federal agencies. They found that the most common problems of educational systems were program confusion and human frustration. When the two conditions existed, it was logical to assume that a management problem was to blame. A closer look showed that management science was a foreign concept and never systematically applied to educational program designs.
The original Alpha program was created to draw from sound management models and design a practical set of learning programs that would bring together students, teachers, administrators, and parents. The specific mission was to design an operational program that focused on the immediate needs of students using proven management system principles. Alpha acquired hundreds of years of past research and development from the people it hired. Alpha employees came from a wide range of backgrounds (education, community systems, system engineers, psychology, economics, etc.).
After extensive analysis and development, an Alpha prototype had been developed. To properly test this prototype, Alpha went into schools and worked with teachers and students on a daily basis. Thankfully, Alpha was able to work with a diverse audience in these developmental stages. Students, teachers, administrators, and parents across the country (urban and rural; Black, Native American, White, Hispanic, and Asian; Gifted & Talented, Special Ed., At-Risk; preschoolers, elementary through adult) helped Alpha implement the model and aided in necessary modifications.
Alpha II has been providing teachers and students with classroom management solutions over the past 30 years. Results have been measured on a daily basis using individual student prescriptions, criterion-referenced tests, and computer management. Results are also seen at the end of the school year with standardized test score gains. Schools in Michigan and New Mexico have been given national recognition and validation while using Alpha in Chapter I and Special Education programs. When Alpha II was fully implemented, Tuba City and Rocky Ridge Boarding Schools enjoyed receiving the highest Stanford 9 Test scores in the Western Navajo Agency schools over the last decade.
Alpha II uses an array of publisher materials, which allows a wide range of skill levels to be met within one classroom. This also prevents schools from becoming dependent on any one publisher. It should be noted that these materials come from the most reputable educational publishers in the market (SRA, Steck-Vaughn, Phoenix Learning, etc.) and were recommended by schools. |
